Character Name: Iroh
Character Series: Avatar: The Last Airbender
Background: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iroh
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avatar:_The_Last_Airbender
Point in Canon: Shortly after the end of the series
Personality: Iroh is a very relaxed, laid back man. He is not overburdened by the xenophobia inducing pride that afflicts most of his countrymen. He approaches everything that comes at him with a spirit of incredible optimism and good naturedness, making a special effort to see the best in everyone around him, even those who mean him harm. He cracks jokes in all but the most serious situations, can always find something to laugh at, and rarely seems worried by danger. He has a huge respect for spirits and other otherworldy matters.
When conflict arises, he always seeks the peaceful solution first. If it comes down to it, he won't hesitate to humiliate or make a fool of himself to do so. His pride was long ago shattered, and he will do whatever he can to protect the people he cares about. He has already lost his eldest son, after all.
The loss of his son was, oddly enough, what brought him around to his current go-with-the-flow attitude. When Lu-Ten died, the part of Iroh's mind that held anything resembling pride and ego just shut down. His younger brother seized the throne and he did not resist, he was banished from the kingdom and he did not resist. If anything, he's treated his banishment as a sort of extended vacation. If hardship does not seem to worry him, it's because in his mind the worst has already come to pass. After that everything else seems like small fry.
There is, however, a core of iron to the man. He was once the greatest general and war hero of his country, and the years of habit and skill that this left in him can't just disappear over night. When someone he cares about is in danger, he will intercede, and he is really good at interceding.
He does not follow the common philosophy behind firebending. While most firebenders get their power from their emotions, normally anger, Iroh uses life itself as his energy source, and it pays off. There are very few times where Iroh is actually challenged by his enemies. He learned this alternative philosophy for firebending from the last two living dragons, in exchange for which he took the "credit" for killing them, thus freeing the dragons from fear of hunters.
He is extraordinarily fond of tea. The most he wants from life these days is to open up his own tea shop. He also seems to enjoy good food, music (he is a capable musician in his own right), art, and is particularly fond of board games (in particular, "Pai-sho", a popular game from his world.).
